A freeze dryer runs for a day or more per batch, so it is natural to worry about the power bill. The short answer: for most households, a freeze dryer adds roughly $5 to $30 a month to the electric bill, depending on machine size, how often you run it and your state's rate. Here is how to estimate your own number.

The formula

Monthly cost = kWh per batch × batches per month × your rate ($/kWh)

Your rate is on your utility bill (total charges divided by kWh used gives an all-in rate). If you do not have it handy, the US average residential rate was 18.31¢/kWh in July 2026 (U.S. EIA).

kWh per batch (our estimates)

Harvest Right states that its Small and Medium units average about 9–11 amps (roughly 990–1,210 W), with the Large around 1,500 W peak and the X-Large about 15 A average. Because compressors and heaters cycle, average draw over a run is below peak. We use estimates of 14 kWh (Small), 18 kWh (Medium), 24 kWh (Large) and 40 kWh (X-Large) per batch. Harvest Right's own per-batch cost estimates imply somewhat lower usage, so these figures lean cautious.

What pushes the number up or down

  • Room temperature. A hot garage makes the refrigeration work harder and lengthens cycles. A cool, ventilated spot helps.
  • Load type. Thick, wet foods (soups, whole berries, thick meat) take longer than thin-sliced fruit or candy. Candy cycles are often much shorter.
  • Half-empty batches. A partly filled machine uses nearly the same energy as a full one, so the cost per pound rises.
  • Time-of-use rates. If your utility charges less overnight, timing helps a little, though a 24+ hour cycle spans peak hours either way.
  • Seasonal rates. Many utilities charge more in summer; July is often near the yearly high.

Put it in context

Four Medium batches a month at the US average costs about $13 in power. That is often less than the mylar bags and oxygen absorbers for the same batches, and far less than the machine's purchase price spread over its first year. Electricity rarely decides whether a freeze dryer pays off; usage and the value of what you dry do. See the per-batch cost in every state, or plug your numbers into the payback calculator.
